Pretty little orange things- so sweet and juicy.

Red Grapes

Red Grapes
6" x 6", Oil
I much prefer to paint from a real still life than a photo. Colors are always different. For larger paintings setting up the composition takes time.  When I just want to sit down and paint I usually grab something from the kitchen like this one.

Crayons

Crayons
6" x 6", Oil

Crayons bring back some good memories for me.  I am sitting next to my father coloring a Santa workshop scene for a contest and asking him if that was the right color to use.  I think I was 10 or younger.  It's funny how some objects can release vivid bits of the past and transport you back to long ago.   Well, I won second place and received a Chatty Cathy doll.  I was disappointed I didn't win first place only because the price was a new wardrobe.  The winner added cotton balls to Santa's beard!

Another bird's nest

A New Start
6" x 6", Oil
I love bird's nest!  If you ever find one look closely at the construction.  It is amazing how all the small pieces of grasses fit together.  I found one that had a long blue plastic strand (from a blue tarp)running thru it.

Onions & Garlic

Onions & Garlic
6" x 6", Oil, $125

I have started to paint on 1/8" ampersand gessobord.  It has a smooth surface and the paint goes on so nicely.  There's no canvas weave texture.  I mount them in frames I got from www.frankenframe.com. This company is exceptional- great customer service!
The great thing about painting still life is... if you are out of ideas just go to your kitchen and grab what's available!    My "go to" are apples and pears but I thought I would give the onion family a try.

Daffodils

Spring is Coming!
Oil, 6" x 6"
Found this brown/amber vase in an antique store.  so cute!   "Wyeth 271"  is on bottom.  It is a medicine/pharmaceutical bottle.  John Wyeth and brother had a pharmacy in Philadelphia in the late 19th century. Not sure of it's original purpose but it must have had a cork stopper.  When the light shines through it is orange glass.

White Carnations
Oil, 6" x 6"
More carnations!  I collect old jars. This one has a lid that is held in place by the metal wire around the neck (pre-Tupperware).   great color too!

Pink Carnations
Oil, 6" x 6"
Carnations are great to have in flower arrangements because they last for more than a week. These were hanging on so I decided to paint them.  This is framed in a big black molding.

Apple Still Life

Apple Still Life
Acrylic, 11" x 14"

Another acrylic with an under-painting.  You can see the texture in the background and glass jar.
I don't know why I love to paint apples and pears.  I just do.

Orange Red Rose

Orange Red Rose
Acrylic on Paper, 7" x 7"
Complimentary colors can really make a painting dramatic!  I love the way this one came together. I used watercolor paper, put a varnish medium on it, applied an under-painting, then started to draw the rose leaving some of the under-painting showing. That's why there is so much texture.

Another large painting.  I enjoy setting up compositions and then painting it from a bird's eye view.  especially like the light and shadows on this one.  What do you think?

Looking Down

Looking Down
30" x 30", Oil
I've been painting bigger pieces but still painting fruits!  These gala apples are big and dramatic.  this piece will go into the Kensington Labor Day show - the three day show at the downtown armory or town hall in Kensington, MD.
